HerVoice Episode 7: Faye Patton

An artist gifted with a unique voice and a pioneering sound that has attracted comparisons with Ray Charles, Rachelle Ferrell, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Nina Simone, Horace Silver and the jazz greats of the 40’s and 50’s. She writes and sings intensely personal songs – lush landscapes of love, loss, passion and inspiration, with rich, soulful vocal stylings and prodigiously funky, groove-ridden command of the piano. A compelling lyricist as well as singer/multi-instrumentalist, at home in varying categories, from Nu-jazz to blues, soul and pop, Faye Patton represents a formidable new talent that defies musical boundaries.

A supremely individual singer/songwriter, guitarist and pianist, inspired by keyboard players such as Ray Charles, Scott Joplin, Herbie Hancock, Diamanda Galas and Tori Amos. Her original songs combine jazz, funk, pop, folk, gospel and blues influences with a pleasingly retro yet contemporary Nu Jazz sound. Prodigiously funky command of the piano and gutsy, fluid vocals that flex and stretch across registers that make audiences gasp. Faye has been compared to Judy Garland and Horace Silver and has a classic vibe that recalls the great divas of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. A compelling lyricist, accomplished instrumentalist, soloist and creative collaborator. Recent recordings feature Faye on guitar, adapting her classical and jazz training into her songwriting.
