Episode 5: Emma King

Emma King’s blossoming music career has already taken her from Northern England to Tennessee, touring Europe and receiving 5-star album reviews along the way.

After being awarded a music scholarship by Carleen Anderson (Brand New Heavies, god-daughter of James Brown), Emma’s live performances in England and Germany gained her fans in America’s roots music scene and, after a number of return trips, she moved to Nashville, TN.

Now returned to the UK, Emma King’s independently produced debut album draws upon her multiflorous musical adventures; the self-titled record pulsates with melodic, groove-laden contemporary songs that bring comparisons to Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox and Fleetwood Mac. The album shows the unique juxtaposition of Emma’s petite frame and HUGE voice – her performance bursting with both youthful energy and authentic, powerful maturity.

She writes and sings intensely personal songs – lush landscapes of love, loss, passion and inspiration, with rich, soulful vocal stylings and prodigiously funky, groove-ridden command of the piano. A compelling lyricist as well as singer/multi-instrumentalist, at home in varying categories, from Nu-jazz to blues, soul and pop, Faye Patton represents a formidable new talent that defies musical boundaries.

Episode 8: Laura Tapp

From her humble beginnings in a small Welsh village, singer-songwriter Laura Tapp is fast establishing herself as a ‘must-see’ act, with nationwide acclaim for her uncanny knack of writing the catchiest of pop/rock tunes.

Acoustic, but with enough bite to thrill even the most reserved of audiences, the cheeky, quirky songwriter has spent years honing her skills, resulting in an outstanding set of original material. Signing to Cambridge-based record label Cracking Tunes in early 2011, Tapp’s début single, ‘You Got Me’ fast became the label’s biggest seller of the year, glimmering with perfect pop sensibilities and husky rock vocals that introduced her note-perfect songwriting to a wide and enthusiastic fan base. Tapp recently performed live on BBC Introducing for Bedfordshire, Herts and Bucks, which was a huge success. This however appears to be only the tip of the iceberg. Laura Tapp possesses a rare gift; a unique and original voice, a voice that is likely to confirm her place as one of the most in-demand artists in the industry today.
